Description: The psychology of personal constructs (PCP) is often cited as a vital forerunner of psychological constructivism. In this chapter we trace this lineage. We show how PCP is firmly grounded in pragmatism, existential phenomenology and hermeneutics. Kelly acknowledged the link with pragmatism. We term existential phenomenology and hermeneutics “latencies” because their influence through the zeitgeist is apparent. Psychological constructivism is based on these three philosophies, emphasizing that the world each of us perceives is made as well as found. These perceptions and constructions are always inseparable from the person's anticipation, intention and action. A full-blooded hermeneutic constructivism follows both Dewey's pragmatism and existential phenomenology in rejecting the dualisms that separate mind from body, self from other and person from environment.
